MOVIE SYNOPSIS - Where can I watch it and what's the story of this 1997 film?

A man goes to see an old school friend who also works at a boiler house and also convinces him to, in short, that burn in one of them a dead roommate just subsequently just killed a fight. An old intellectual tries to explain to the five year old daughter of his neighbor " all the abominations of his unhappy life ". A girl get a job in maternity records to try to discover the identity of the mother who abandoned her years ago..
